If you have a choice between lying out in the sun or visiting a tanning salon, you may be interested in some of the benefits of a UV tan versus traditional sun tanning and that is exactly what we’re going to talk about on this page.

Artificial Versus Natural Light When Sun Tanning

You can get a tan by lying on the beach or on a deck chair, or by lying in a tanning bed at a tanning salon. The primary difference between the tanning salon and lying out in the sun is that the sun’s rays are made up of both UVA and UVB light while tanning beds primarily use long wave UVA rays. Why is that important? Well, UVA rays do not cause sunburns as easily as UVB rays. Therefore, you’re less likely to suffer a sunburn when tanning at a salon as long as you do your tanning in moderation.

It is important to note however that although UVA rays were once thought to be harmless, it is now known that both UVA and UVB rays can cause damage to the skin with overexposure.

Whether you are using a tanning bed or soaking up the sun’s rays outdoors, sun tanning does have some inherent risks. Overexposure to ultraviolet light can of course lead to sunburns but it can also cause premature aging and wrinkles. Overexposure to UV rays can even lead to skin cancer. However, the key word here is “overexposure.” If done carefully and in moderation, getting a nice tan can give you the look you want while minimizing the risks. And protecting yourself from overexposure is more easily controlled in a salon than it is outdoors.

Some Benefits of Tanning at a Salon

In addition to reduced exposure to UVB rays, there are a number of other benefits of a UV tan versus traditional sun tanning. One of the major benefits is that tanning in a salon means that you’re getting your tanning in a highly controlled environment. A tanning bed is set to produce a carefully balanced amount of UV light. The UV rays emitted by a tanning bed are very consistent so you can control precisely how much UV light you are being exposed to. When tanning outdoors, this is not the case. Even if you tan outside for the same amount of time each time you tan, the amount of UV light you are exposed to can vary greatly.

Because you can control the amount of UV light you are exposed to and because tanning beds can give you a controlled and consistent amount of UV exposure, tanning in a salon can be a lot safer than traditional sun tanning. Of course there are a number of other benefits as well. Tanning at a salon gives you the convenience of being able to tan whenever you please. Traditional Sun tanning obviously requires particular weather conditions. Tanning at a salon also offers you privacy that’s not always possible with traditional sun tanning.

The ability to eliminate certain variables like weather conditions, the seasons, time of day etc. and the ability to control how much ultraviolet light you are exposed to make a UV tan a much better choice than traditional sun tanning.
